Why I made Happy Folders

Hi, I'm Vivek Advani. I'm a polymath and a maker, I've got ADHD, and for years my own Mac desktop genuinely stressed me out. Happy Folders is the little app I built to fix that, and it turned my daily chaos into big, friendly tiles I actually enjoy looking at. I honestly can't use a Mac without it now.

Big, friendly tiles instead of tiny icons.

My desktop was chaos

I'd open my Mac and feel it instantly: the clutter, the noise, a hundred tiny icons shouting at once. With an ADHD brain, that isn't just messy, it's exhausting.

So I did what a lot of us do. I'd either cram everything into two or three folders, or just hide every icon and pretend the mess wasn't there. Neither one really worked though. Hidden stuff may as well not exist, and even when I did cram it all away, I'd just end up staring at three tiny folders quietly doing the job of a whole desktop.

Then it hit me: why are Mac icons so tiny?

Even perfectly organised into three folders, here's what I was left with: three little icons, each barely an inch wide. That's about as big as a Mac folder gets.

I'm sitting in front of a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 Max, and it could only show me one-inch icons, locked to a rigid grid. What's the point of all that beautiful screen if I can only use a sliver of it?

So I broke the size barrier. And the grid.

Happy Folders was my way out. Big, bold, friendly tiles, as large as I want, placed wherever I feel like, with no grid bossing me around about where things go.

And suddenly I could actually see my work again. One glance and I knew exactly what was what. Those big, calm tiles keep my head on track instead of overwhelmed, and it worked so well that, honestly, I can never go back.

Why I had to share it

Here's the thought I keep coming back to: we spend most of our waking hours staring at screens. And most of those screens are designed to overwhelm us: to grab, to ping, to pull us in ten directions at once.

Your desktop shouldn't be one of them. It should be the calm corner. Happy Folders is my small rebellion: a screen that makes you a little calmer, a little more in control, genuinely a little happier. That felt worth sharing with everyone.

If your desktop stresses you out too, I made this for you. Vivek
